Finally seeing the light … ?
There will be more girls at this weekend’s California high school track and field championships than originally planned following a mid-week decision by the California Interscholastic Federation.
After the success of Jurupa Valley High School’s AB Hernández in the long jump and triple jump this season, and a strongly worded message from President Trump on Truth Social, the CIF announced the following “pilot program” according to KTVU:
“[A]ny biological female student-athlete who would have earned the next qualifying mark for one of their Section’s automatic qualifying entries in the CIF State meet, and did not achieve the CIF State at-large mark in the finals at their Section meet, was extended an opportunity to participate in the 2025 CIF State Track and Field Championships.”
The CIF said it “believes” the program “achieves the participation opportunities” for student athletes.
The report notes the changes pertain only to this weekend’s championships, and it’s unclear if they apply only to events in which trans athletes are participating, or every event.
President Trump’s message said in part “California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’S SPORTS […] Please be hereby advised that large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to.”
Trump also noted (rightly) that Governor Newsom said recently the participation of “transgender girls” in girls sports is “deeply unfair.”
Jim Geraghty reports that according to Newsom’s office, the CIF announcement was “entirely coincidental.” Whatever the case, Geraghty says the CIF decision is quite significant given California’s politics:
[I]t’s the first time anyone in California’s education establishment has conceded, through actions and policy choices, that the female student athletes and parents who object to the participation of trans athletes might have a legitimate complaint. By adding another slot for any “any biological female student-athlete” that would have qualified if the trans athlete had not competed, the CIF is acknowledging, through the rules and policies, that there’s a difference between an athlete born male and an athlete born female. …
Up until yesterday, the position of the CIF was that there was no valid or justifiable objection to [trans] athletes participating.
Indeed, Geraghty notes the CIF had even considered objections to trans athlete participation as “discrimination” in its “Gender Diverse Youth Sport Inclusivity Toolkit.”
The KTVU report notes Democratic politicians recently blocked bills in the state legislature that would have prohibited biological males from competing in girls sports.
The LGBTQ+ rights group Equality California slammed both Trump and the California Interscholastic Federation, saying the former was “bullying” and the latter needed to keep its “inclusive, evidence-based policies.”
